The Best Fake Tan Isn't Always the Darkest.
THE TAN EDIT
A little warmth, a deep bronze or colour for tonight? Finding your best fake tan starts with the result you want—and the routine you can actually live with.

There is a particular kind of optimism involved in buying fake tan. You picture the dress, the bare shoulders, the excellent lighting. Then you meet the shelf: dark, ultra-dark, express, gradual, milk, mousse. Somewhere between the promises, your original brief gets lost.
The best fake tan for you is the one that fits your desired colour, skin needs and available time. Start there. A deeper shade is useful when you want a deeper result; it is not a measure of product quality. And a formula that suits someone else's weekly ritual may be completely wrong for your Tuesday evening.
This guide focuses on body tanning. Our product examples explain useful differences using published instructions and THE TAN LINE's product research. They are not winners from a comparative wear test.
Start with the result you want
Before deciding what to buy, finish this sentence: “I want my skin to look…”
Perhaps the answer is slightly warmer. Perhaps it is noticeably bronzed. Perhaps you want colour on your legs for one evening, with no commitment to keeping it up afterwards. Those are different jobs.
“Natural-looking” needs a little unpacking, too. Do you mean subtle colour? An even finish? A shade you feel comfortable wearing without make-up? Tell yourself which matters most. A product described as natural-looking by its manufacturer cannot promise the same effect on every person.
FIND YOUR KIND OF TAN
JUST A LITTLE COLOUR
Look for a gradual formula with clear instructions for building colour. Each application still needs care.
A DEEPER BRONZE
Choose a product offering the depth you want. Judge the colour once it has developed, not just when it first goes on.
AN EARLIER SHOWER
Look for an express formula with a clear rinse time. Being ready to shower does not necessarily mean your colour is finished.
COLOUR FOR RIGHT NOW
Look for an explicitly instant, wash-off product. Check drying, removal and clothing advice—it does a different job from developing self-tan.
DRY AREAS TO WORK AROUND
Plan your preparation and choose a formula whose instructions and ingredients suit you. Skincare promises alone do not guarantee an even tan.
You do not need to know your preferred format yet. Let your answers narrow the choices.
The best fake tan for pale skin depends on how much colour you want
Pale skin describes your starting point. It does not tell us your desired destination.
If you want a small change, a lighter-result option or a gradual formula gives you a sensible place to begin. Follow its directions and assess the developed colour before deciding whether to apply again. If you want a deeper bronze, say so: recommending the faintest possible glow would miss your brief.
Shade names vary between brands. “Medium” on one bottle does not necessarily match “Medium” on another. Your own previous results are more useful than the name alone.
For an important event, try your intended routine beforehand. Check the result in daylight, including hands, feet and the transition between face and body. An evening mirror check is a poor substitute for seeing how the whole look comes together.
A natural-looking tan is about more than the guide colour
Some self-tanners are tinted so you can see where you have applied them. Others go on clear. That application colour and the tan that develops are different things.
A visible guide can help you see where you have applied your tan. With a clear formula, you need to keep track of where you have been. Neither tells you, by itself, exactly how the developed colour will look on your skin.
Colour-correction promises deserve a closer look, too. A violet, green or blue foam does not, by itself, mean you will avoid orange results. Look for evidence about that particular product and its finished colour, rather than choosing by the colour of the foam alone.
“Clear” does not automatically mean “will not mark my clothes”, either. Check the instructions. If a brand says its tan resists transfer, that remains the brand's claim unless relevant testing backs it up.
Gradual tan still needs a proper application
A gradual routine can appeal if you like building your colour a little at a time. But the familiar feel of a body lotion can make it tempting to hurry.
“People often don't use enough gradual tan. They treat it like their everyday body moisturiser and rush it on, but you still need to be deliberate with your application. Use enough to spread evenly over each limb, and take time to check for missed patches.”
— Adele Upson, founder of THE TAN LINE, with 10 years' practical self-tanning industry experience
Think even coverage, rather than a thick coating left sitting on the skin. Work through sections of the body and follow the particular product's directions. There is no universal pump count: dispensers, formulas and the area you are covering differ.
Take Dove Summer Revived Gradual Tan Lotion, Light to Medium, 200ml. Dove describes it as a gradual tanning lotion with moisturising benefits. Its instructions say to apply evenly to clean, dry skin, wash hands and allow it to absorb before dressing. Dove's advertised 72 hours refers to moisturisation, not the time needed to develop a tan or how long the colour lasts. Dove product information
It shows how a gradual lotion can fit into a routine. That does not make it the best choice for every beginner or everyone with dry skin.
For dry skin look beyond the skincare headline
When choosing fake tan for dry skin, think about preparation, the formula and your routine afterwards. A moisturising ingredient on the label cannot tell you exactly how the product will feel on your skin—or how evenly it will fade.
The American Academy of Dermatology advises applying self-tanner to dry skin, working in sections and paying particular attention to knees, elbows and ankles, where colour can build more strongly. Follow your product's preparation advice and take care over those transitions. Dermatologist application guidance
Dryness and sensitivity are also different concerns. If you have known ingredient sensitivities, check the exact pack you will use. “Hydrating” or “skin-loving” on the bottle does not tell you whether it suits your particular sensitivities.
And do not assume that a milk must give a delicate tint. Bali Body Self Tan Body Milk, 240ml is described by its manufacturer as colourless and rinse-free, with visible results in four to six hours. The brand also describes a dark result. Its name tells you about the format; it does not promise a barely-there glow. Bali Body product information
It is worth a closer look if you want to skip the rinse step. You will still need to judge the colour, feel and wear on your own skin. This is the brand's description, not our independent test result.
Express tan means checking two clocks
When you need colour for an occasion, ask two separate questions: when can I shower, and when will the colour be ready?
With St.Tropez Express Bronzing Mousse, 200ml, the UK instructions say to rinse after one hour for light, two for medium or three for dark. The brand also says the colour continues developing over eight hours. So “one hour” tells you when you can rinse—not that your finished colour will be ready then. St.Tropez UK instructions
That can work well if you want an earlier shower. It may not solve “I leave in an hour”.
For the fuller explanation, read How Long Does Fake Tan Take to Develop?. If you need colour immediately, investigate an explicitly instant, wash-off product instead of assuming an express self-tanner does the same job.
Let the format follow your routine
Mousse, lotion, milk, water and drops describe the form your tan comes in. “Gradual” and “express” describe how a tanning routine works. They are not all competing categories: a mousse can be express, and a lotion can be gradual.
If you want to see where you have applied your tan, check that it has a guide tint. If fitting in a shower is awkward, look for a product designed to be left on. If you are considering drops, follow the exact mixing directions and check whether they are intended for face or body. Do not assume all drops work neat or can be added to any product.
Then consider the things you will notice every time you use it: application effort, scent, drying instructions and repeat use. A tan that asks more of your week than you want to give it is unlikely to become your favourite, however beautiful the bottle.
Find the best fake tan for your version of a good glow
You can want a deep tan. You can want almost no visible change. You can prefer an evening ritual or want the shortest practical routine. A useful recommendation should take those preferences seriously.
Start with your desired result, then your skin needs and timing. Bring any previous products you loved—or struggled with—into the decision. That is a much better brief than “give me whichever one is darkest”.
Self-tan does not replace sun protection. Continue your usual sun-protection routine. AAD guidance
