Dear Tan Line / No. 01
A big night. A one-hour tan. A small panic.
How long does fake tan take to develop?
Your bottle says one hour. Your plans say tomorrow night. Let’s put rinse time and finished colour in the right order.

The dilemma
Dear Tan Line,
“I’m going out tomorrow night. My bottle says ‘one-hour tan’—does that mean I’ll be ready in an hour? When should I actually put it on?”
An illustrative question, not a submitted reader letter.
The Tan Line answers
A one-hour rinse does not always mean finished colour.
Fake tan can take several hours to develop, and the exact timing depends on the product. Some express formulas let you rinse after one hour while the colour continues developing afterwards. Check both the rinse instructions and the development time before planning your evening.
For example, Bondi Sands says its Express Self Tanning Foam continues developing for 6–8 hours, including after the guide colour is washed off. That is the brand’s guidance for this formula—not a timetable for every fake tan. Source: Bondi Sands.
Adele’s take
“It might not be ready after an hour.”
Adele’s practical advice is to think of the rinse window as helping set the depth. With many express tans, washing off does not mean the colour has finished developing: it can continue to deepen afterwards. An earlier rinse may give a lighter result than a later rinse within that product’s instructions.
Her point for anyone getting ready to go out: do not assume the shortest time on the bottle is the moment you will see your final colour.
Edited from Adele’s contribution to this column. A one-hour result is not universally light: formulas differ. For example, Bondi Sands markets its separate Ultra Express formula for a rich one-hour result. That is a brand claim, not our test verdict, and it should not be confused with the Express Foam example below.
Drying, rinsing and developing: what’s the difference?
Before setting an alarm, work out which part of the process the bottle is describing.
- 01
Drying: when you can get dressed
This is about the product feeling dry on your skin. It is not a signal that your tan is finished. St.Tropez advises allowing its tan to become touch-dry before dressing. Follow your own product’s directions. Source: St.Tropez FAQs.
- 02
Rinsing: when to shower off
For a rinse-off formula, this is how long to leave it on before showering. An express product may offer different rinse times for different depths. Other products have different instructions; some do not require rinsing. Source: St.Tropez FAQs.
- 03
Developing: when to judge the colour
A tan may still be developing after that first shower. St.Tropez’s Express Starter Kit instructions, for instance, separate the 1–3-hour rinse step from continued development over eight hours. Source: St.Tropez Express Starter Kit.
What do real express-tan instructions say?
These examples explain timing. They are not a ranking, a personal recommendation or a hands-on product test.
| Exact product | Rinse guidance | Colour development |
|---|---|---|
| Bondi Sands Express Self Tanning Foam | 1 hour for light, 2 for medium, 3 for deepest. | The brand says development continues for 6–8 hours, including after rinsing. [1] |
| St.Tropez Express Bronzing Mousse, 50ml in the Express Starter Kit | 1, 2 or 3 hours, depending on the desired shade. | The kit directions describe continued development over 8 hours. [2] |
Brand wording does not always make the starting point of a development window explicit. We have not turned these descriptions into a guaranteed finish time. Check the current instructions on your exact bottle; do not transfer them to another range or version.
When should I fake tan before an event?
For tomorrow’s night out, make the plan before you apply. Our practical approach is to work backwards from when you need to be ready, allowing room for the instructions and your routine.
Your backwards plan
- Start with departure. Note when you need to be dressed and out of the door.
- Read the whole timetable. Find the product’s development guidance as well as its rinse window. If the wording is unclear, do not assume the shortest number is the finished result.
- Choose a workable application slot. Include applying, drying and any required shower—not just time wearing the product.
- Allow for preparation. Follow the bottle’s preparation and patch-test instructions before you start. A last-minute plan should not skip them.
We would favour a product and routine you already know for an important event. If the required steps do not fit, change the plan rather than inventing a shorter development time. That is a planning recommendation, not a promise about the shade you will achieve.
Your follow-up questions
Why does my tan look lighter after showering?
With a tinted express tan, the rinse removes the guide colour. That need not mean the developing tan has failed: the Bondi Sands example above specifically allows for development after wash-off. Wait for the stated window before deciding you need another layer. [1]
Can I leave express tan on overnight?
Do not assume that “longer” is the instruction. Use the rinse window for your exact product and desired result; the express examples here specify up to three hours. An overnight plan is only appropriate if your own product’s directions support it.
Is express tan the same as instant tan?
No. Bondi Sands describes instant tan as immediately visible colour that washes off with soap and water, while its express products have their own development instructions. Check which type you are buying. Source: Bondi Sands FAQs.
Does every fake tan take eight hours?
No single number covers every formula. St.Tropez’s general guidance distinguishes standard self-tan, express and gradual products. Read the exact product directions rather than applying a rule from a different bottle. [3]
